Coeliac Disease
Differences between coeliac disease, gluten intolerance unrelated to coeliac disease and gluten allergy
Coeliac disease is an inherited, chronic health condition.
Gluten allergy or gluten intolerance unrelated to coeliac disease may be transient, meaning it may not last for a lifetime. It also does not cause damage to the small intestine like coeliac disease.
People with coeliac disease have an increased risk of malnutrition, gastrointestinal cancer and other autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes or thyroid disease. While people with gluten intolerance not related to coeliac disease and people with gluten allergy have the same risk for these diseases as a healthy person.
